Beyond Sleep: Embracing True Rest for Mind, Body, and Spirit

With a never-ending to-do list and non-stop notifications, rest can feel like a luxury rather than a necessity, especially in a world that celebrates productivity and where hustle culture reins. But the truth is, our bodies and minds need regular breaks to recharge, reset, thrive, and solve many of the challenges we’re dealing with in our businesses. Most of us agree that creativity doesn’t come to us when we’re exhausted. Rest is not just about sleep; it includes a range of simple practices that allow us to pause, breathe, and reconnect with ourselves.

Why Rest Matters

Just as nature has seasons of growth and dormancy, we also need cycles of activity and rest. Vitalist traditions remind us that rest is fundamental to our well-being. When well-rested, our bodies naturally perform essential functions like detoxification, repair, and energy restoration. Beyond sleep, many forms of rest nurture our overall health.

  • Mental Rest: Unplugging from constant information streams can help ease an overactive mind. While technology is helpful, it can also be draining. Put the phone down, turn it to silent, and set aside time each day to nourish your mental space.

  • Physical Rest: This could mean taking a gentle walk in nature, lying on the grass, sitting under a tree with a good book, or even engaging in breathwork. Physical rest doesn’t always mean inactivity; it could also be low-energy activities that help your muscles, joints, and nervous system recover.

  • Emotional Rest: To recharge emotionally, we need time to process, release, and reflect on our feelings. This could look like journaling, talking to a trusted friend, doodling, or simply giving yourself permission to sit with your emotions without judgment.

  • Sensory Rest: Our senses are often overwhelmed by constant exposure to screens, sounds, and bright lights. Take a sensory break by seeking silence, dim lighting, or even nature’s sounds—like wind through trees or water flowing. If you can’t get outside, try a sound machine - I live in a busy part of town and find that using a sound machine to help quiet the sound of cars is soothing - and my dogs agree.

Practical Ways to Incorporate Rest

  • Schedule Micro-Rests: Set daily reminders for a minute or two. Close your eyes, take a deep breath, and feel your body relax. These mini-breaks, surprisingly rejuvenating and empowering, require minimal time. A simple breathing exercise like breathing in for the count of four, holding for four, and out for the count of eight can be calming and empowering. It's a small act, but it puts you in control of your well-being.

  • Nature Time: Nature offers grounding energy that helps recalibrate our systems. Even a few minutes outside can dramatically reduce stress and improve mood. Remember: being in nature isn’t about doing—it’s about simply being, and it's as simple as stepping outside your door or sitting in the grass. The calming effect of nature can bring peace and tranquility to your day.

  • Embrace 'Slow Moments': Instead of rushing through activities, try slowing down during routine tasks. Whether it’s savoring your morning tea, mindfully washing dishes, or walking at a leisurely pace, these moments allow for a subtle but powerful form of rest, bringing a sense of calm to your day. Embracing 'slow moments' can help you feel more in control of your time and less rushed.

  • Prioritize Boundaries: Don’t be shy about making space for rest, say no when needed, and establish boundaries around work and personal obligations. Giving yourself permission to protect your rest time is one of the most powerful forms of self-care. I make a flower essence called ‘Celebrate Boundaries,’ which clients report has helped them, especially my fellow people pleasers.

  • The Power of Gratitude: Gratitude encourages us to pause and appreciate the present moment. A pause for gratitude shifts our thoughts to focusing on what we’re thankful for, away from what’s next on our to-do list, and towards the beauty of what’s already here. This simple practice slows us down and brings us into a state of mindfulness, helping us connect more deeply with ourselves and our surroundings, bringing a sense of calm, and reducing stress.

Rest is Self-Compassion

Rest is not just a break from work or a busy life; it’s a radical act of self-love. Allowing yourself to rest sends a powerful message to yourself and others -  that your well-being is a priority. The next time you feel pressured to keep going, consider the benefits of pausing. Rest isn’t about what we’re missing; it’s about what we’re nurturing.
